INTRODUCTION TO HVAC

There is an old adage that suggests only under the perfect conditions can a seed germinate. With just the right amount of humidity, temperature and richness of the soil where it is planted you are assured of a healthy crop on your hands. It stands to reason that there are similarities when it comes to harnessing optimum working conditions for better efficiency, effectiveness and maximum productivity in your business entity.

A work place environment that is too hot can fluster employees and result in a decrease in productivity due to factors that include fatigue, loss of concentration, or irritation. On the other hand, an environment that is too cold can have similar effects that counter productivity. In fact, some work spaces are required by regulatory statutes to adhere to specific air conditioning to safeguard against inhaling toxic fumes and/or chemicals. That said, it is necessary to strike a delicate balance that ensures an environment that maintains employees’ drive and inspiration.

Thermostats help make your buildings more connected, comfortable and convenient

“A human being is sensitive to abnormal temperature and humidity. A human body is set to operate in a certain environment and with the right temperatures, they can be productive,” said Joseph Phiri, an engineer at JBMS.

Phiri explained that there are multiple advantages of utilising HVAC (Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning) in homes.

“It provides comfort by controlling your environment to suit your needs; when its hot, it can provide cooling and when its cold, smart heating can be provided.”

Turning to prevention of diseases and infections, he said: “Some systems can ventilate your room to ensure the environment is not conducive for infectious disease growth. It also enhances your lifestyle as you can be comfortable and hence it increases your life expectancy.”

Midwall Splits are the most commonly used units for individual rooms in homes and offices. One of the reasons being that they come in various brands and technologies, with the most noticeable in the form of the inverter and non-inverter technologies. The inverter uses technology where the unit runs according to the load demand, thus saving on energy and the unit lifespan. Meanwhile, the non-inverter technology switches off the compressor when the set temperature is achieved and switches on when there is a demand for cooling or heating. The midwalls are advantageous as they can be integrated into a group of indoor units working with a single outdoor unit, can be connected with ceiling cassettes and ducted split units or according design. This ultimately saves on space and initial cost of materials.

Phiri said that HVAC ensures that equipment, such as servers, or other machinery, work well while creating a healthy environment by removing toxic gases and dusts from the work environment to help with indoor air quality. He concluded: “As winter is approaching, HVAC systems can help set comfortable temperatures and smart heating, allowing utilisation of the space anytime of the day. Modern HVAC systems are very energy efficient and can cut down power usage by almost 40% as compared to predecessors.”
